What Is The Coronavirus?


COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. The outbreak of disease started in Dec. 2019 with the first case reported in China. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognised the outbreak of COVID-19 as a pandemic on 11 March 2020.

By the end of July 2020, there are over 17 million confirmed cases and close to 700 thousand deaths which have brought the economies of many countries to a halt. Countries that have implemented a global travel ban in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by April 2020 (above), later they gradually opened their borders. But there is still risk of the next waves of COVID-19 pandemic.

Coronaviruses are crown-like respiratory viruses, replicating in the airways. Symptoms of infection can be mild, like the common cold, or more severe.

The median incubation time is estimated to be 5.1 days with symptoms expected to be present within 12 days of infection.

Diagnostic testing is possibly the only efficient way to know the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 in time and space, enabling policymakers and healthcare workers to track and mitigate the outbreak of COVID-1.

The WHO has appealed for global mass testing and defined molecular diagnostics as the gold standard for COVID-19 test.

How To Collect Samples ?

According to CDC Guidelines; specimen should be collected as soon as possible once a decision has been made to pursue testing, regardless of the time of symptom onset.

For initial diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2, CDC recommends collecting and testing an upper respiratory specimen. The following are acceptable specimens:

  • A nasopharyngeal (NP) specimen
  • An oropharyngeal (OP) specimen
  • A nasal mid turbinate swab (using a flocked tapered swab)
  • A n anterior nares (nasal swab)swab(using a flocked or spun polyester swab)
  • Nasopharyngeal wash/aspirate or nasal wash/aspirate (NW)

Swabs should be placed immediately into a sterile transport tube containing 2-3mL of either viral transport medium (CoViNaT), Amies transport medium, or sterile saline, unless using a test designed to analyze a specimen directly, (i.e., without placement in CoViNaT). ncov/lab/guidelines clinical specimens.html

COVID-19 RNA Purification Kit utilizes a special lysis buffer in combination with silica based spin columns to efficiently purify viral RNA from the biological specimens.

Viral samples are lysed in optimized lysis buffer containing chaotropic salts. Binding buffer provides the selective binding condition of RNA to the silica matrix. The impurities such as proteins, salts and cellular debris are removed during subsequent washing and centrifugation steps.

Finally, highly pure nucleic acids are released with low ionic strength buffer. The purified RNA can be used directly in the most demanding downstream applications for in vitro diagnostic analysis. The entire procedure can be completed in 30 minutes.
